I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)
In this short sentence, we find the reason behind Jesus' Incarnation. Why did He take the form of flesh?
Why was He born in a virgin birth? Why was it necessary to live a sinless life? Why was He crucified on the cross? And finally, why did He resurrect from the grave?
At the very center of these questions is the virgin birth of Jesus. Without the virgin birth, there could have been no eternal life. You see, following the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, all mankind was born with a sinful nature. This sin nature excluded them from having a right relationship with God. As a matter of fact, the Bible says “the wages of sin is death.” (Ro. 6:23 NIV). The penalty for sin is spiritual death, total separation from God. The Hebrews for centuries had been sacrificing animals and using the blood of these animals to cover their sins. The problem was, the blood of bulls and goats could not take away their sins. (Heb. 10:4). God is a just God and His wrath had to be avenged. But, a sinful man was not qualified to pay the debt for all mankind. Neither could bulls and goats. Since all men had sinned, an appropriate sacrifice for mankind’s sin could not be found. Enter Jesus as a baby boy, born in a stable to a virgin mother. Immanuel, God with us, God in the flesh, fully God yet fully man. He was sinless because of His virgin birth and could be the perfect sacrifice to pay the debt for man’s sins. Jesus lived a sinless life and gave His life on the cross to pay that death. He defeated death for all time when He resurrected from the grave. The Bible says that “to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12 NIV)
The Bible says that you and I can have eternal life just like Jesus does. Many of us are familiar with John 3:16 in the Bible. Jesus said, “for God so loved the world, He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV). The greatest gift ever given to mankind is available for you. That gift is eternal life. Eternal life is heaven. Jesus is in heaven and eternal life means that when you die, you will go to heaven. Eternal life is God’s gift to mankind. You can’t do anything to earn it. The Bible says “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. (Eph. 2:8-9 NIV).
Do you want to have eternal life? If so, pray this prayer to God. “God, I know that I have sinned and done wrong. I want to go to heaven when I die. I turn away from my sin and I turn to Jesus. I place my faith in Him and ask Him to forgive my sins and save my soul for eternity. Thank you Jesus, for saving my soul!
If you prayed this prayer and truly meant it, then you will want to follow up with a local church. I invite you to contact me or one of the other staff members at Lamar Baptist Church. We will be glad to pray with you and share how you can begin to grow in your relationship with Jesus. If you cannot contact one of us, find a church near you that believes in the Bible and contact the pastor of that church.
Blessings to you and your family this holiday season!
