Who is Your Hero?

Is. 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

This Child was destined to be the future King who would bring about the reign of God and the redemption of His people. He would be the promised Messiah Israel had long waited for and justice and righteousness would be the characteristics of His kingdom. The names used to describe Him are more an extension of His name Immanuel that they are names for Him. They are various qualities that would be found in this King. He would demonstrate these qualities as He ruled over His people. It is important that we understand just what they mean. The one name that stands out most to me is the name “Mighty God.” It is the Hebrew “El Gibbor” which is literally “God Hero.”

In ancient days, a hero was the people’s champion who would deliver them from their enemy. This is no more so than in the story of David and Goliath. Their hero would fight for them against the hero or champion of their enemy. Victory for one of the champions would be victory for all his people. David’s victory over Goliath was a victory for all Israel.

Think of Jesus, “El Gibbor” the God Hero. He is our Champion, our Hero. He has fought for us against our last enemy death. He has won the battle and defeated our enemy for all time.  Through Him, all people can have victory over death.  1 Cor. 15:54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Hero has triumphed over the enemy death. In doing so, He has given us the greatest gift ever. The gift of eternal life. Will you place your faith in Him today?
