We've entered into the Christmas season, or as it's labeled on the liturgical calendar, Advent. Advent is a word that we hear often at this time of year yet rarely get clearly explained. At least to my young Baptist self, Advent was a mystery. The definition is simple. Advent is the arrival or coming of something or someone. To a Christian, the arrival or coming could only mean one thing: the incarnation of Christ.
This is the season where we set our hearts with anticipation on the coming Christ. Isaiah 7:14 is a verse of prophecy that was delivered to King Ahaz. The Lord said, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." This prophecy of Immanuel is what we anticipate. Immanuel, God With Us. What a blessing! All of mankind, gifted with the very presence of God on this earth.
Join us here at Lamar this Advent season as we look forward to Christmas: a celebration of the day that Immanuel came to Earth.
